We have been instructed by a prestigious, top-tier law firm in Lagos to identify a dynamic and accomplished Senior Oil & Gas Transactions Lawyer to build and lead their new Energy and Extractive Industries Practice Group.
We are seeking an industry-recognized specialist who brings not just technical mastery, but the strategic foresight to shape the firm’s future. The ideal candidate will be a trusted advisor with in-depth knowledge of upstream, midstream, and downstream operations, alongside a solid grasp of the regulatory, commercial, and project development landscape in Nigeria and across the region.
Key Responsibilities
• Practice Leadership: Establish, structure, and grow a dedicated Energy & Extractive Industries group from the ground up.
• Business Development: Leverage deep industry connections and a proven track record to attract new, high-value clients and drive revenue growth.
• Transactional Expertise: Deliver high-impact legal advice on complex matters, including project finance, joint ventures, acquisitions/divestments, and production sharing contracts.
• Regulatory Command: Provide strategic counsel on compliance with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), local content requirements (NCDMB), and dealings with regulatory bodies like NUPRC.
• Team Development: Mentor, coach, and guide junior associates to build a high-performance team.
Required Qualifications & Skills
• Experience: Minimum of 10+ years of PQE in transactional energy law, with significant experience in a top-tier law firm or leading in-house role in the oil & gas sector.
• Qualifications: Qualified to practice law in Nigeria (Nigerian Bar).
• Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of the Nigerian energy landscape, including upstream, midstream, and downstream operations.
• Skills: Exceptional negotiation, drafting, and analytical skills, with a focus on commercial pragmatism.
• Profile: An entrepreneurial mindset with an established reputation in the Nigerian energy sector.
