Key Responsibilities of an Accountant
1. Financial Recordkeeping
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date ledgers, journals, and financial records
• Post transactions such as sales, purchases, expenses, and payroll
2. Financial Reporting
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
• Assist in preparing budgets, forecasts, and financial analyses
3. Compliance & Regulation
• Ensure compliance with local laws, tax regulations, and accounting standards (e.g., IFRS, GAAP)
• Handle tax filings, such as VAT, corporate tax, PAYE, etc.
4. Reconciliation
• Perform regular bank and account reconciliations
• Reconcile vendor statements and resolve discrepancies
5. Internal Controls & Audits
• Implement and monitor internal financial controls
• Assist with internal and external audits by providing necessary documentation
6. Cost & Budget Management
• Monitor departmental spending and support budget controls
• Analyze cost structures to improve efficiency and profitability
7. Payroll and Payments
• Process employee salaries, deductions, and contributions
• Manage vendor payments and staff reimbursements
QUALIFICATION:
1. Educational Qualifications
• Minimum:
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related field
• Preferred:
• HND in Accountancy (recognized in many sectors, especially in Nigeria)
• Master’s degree in Accounting or Finance (for senior roles)
2. Professional Certifications (Highly Valued or Required)
Depending on the country and job level, certifications may be essential:
• ICAN (Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria) – widely recognized in Nigeria
• ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants)
• CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants)
• CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) – for finance-oriented roles
3. Technical Skills
• Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, Tally, Oracle, SAP)
• Strong knowledge of Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, financial models)
• Understanding of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) or GAAP
• Ability to use ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Microsoft Dynamics) is an advantage
4. Soft Skills
• Attention to detail and high accuracy
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Integrity and confidentiality
• Good time management and ability to meet deadlines
• Communication and interpersonal skills (for dealing with auditors, tax authorities, or management)
5. Experience
• Entry-level: 0–2 years (some companies offer graduate trainee programs)
• Mid-level: 3–5 years in a similar accounting or finance role
